Living in New England my entire life I've eaten countless creamy seafood chowders stemming from all kinds of soup recipes, but the chatter at the table is always how to make a healthy chowder (celery)? Using Muriel's award-winning seafood chowder spice packet the hard work of finding the exact blend of spices is taken away for you. All those pop-up ads shouting 15-minute delicious soup recipes are not going to give the memorable keto seafood flavors that you would want to share with your friends and family. Rather, we have designed a recipe that cuts down every unnecessary step and gives you the most efficient cooking experience for time and seafood flavor. Although our chowder recipe's cook time is more than 15 minutes we can assure you that not a minute of this soup recipe is wasted.

Reinventing Award Winning Seafood Chowder Keto Style

Tradition says chowder is excellent in its own right. Bursting with clam juice deliciousness delivered in an ocean of heavy cream and butter. While that's great and all I myself have had one too many clam chowders with curdled cream. Who wants that? Are we eating crusty oatmeal or authentic clam soup? Just like the rest of us clam/fish soup lovers my family searched for an alternative and arrived at this keto recipe. With a few tweaks from the first versions, our master chowder chef Muriel has put the stamp of approval on this low carb keto seafood soup recipe. Keto is always the choice!

Supplementing the true flavor of potatoes is difficult, however, with the help of Muriel we've got it pretty darn close. Our personal favorite for this recipe is the turnup. The turnup is perfecting for supplementing potatoes on a keto diet in any heart stew. In terms of taste and texture, the turnup is the closest you'll get to potatoes. The best part is they behave exactly like potatoes too! You can chop them exactly the same size as you would prefer your potatoes in your traditional memories of clam soup. Some prefer small some prefer large, whatever floats your boat for you and your family. You should keep in mind, however, turnups do cook a bit faster than potatoes due to their lack of starch. Simply check on them with a fork in the last 15 minutes of the cooking process. Cauliflower will also help. Cauliflower is a great supplement to carbs.

The best way we found says to replicate the thickness of traditional seafood chowder in less than 10 minutes was the addition of glucomannan. Simply whisk this ingredient into your chowder toward the end of the cooking process. You can prepare for this step in the prep time of this recipe.

Clams, Fish, Shrimp, Scallops, Lobster... it's up to you!

You might be tired of reading the word seafood soup I've already typed it so many times thus far, but the word choice is deliberate. Whether you want to enjoy some delicious fish chowder, clam soup, shellfish chowder, lobster soup, or a mix of any combination they all fall into the seafood chowder family. That's why Newport Chowder Company's "Secret Spice Packs" are so excellent. No matter what soup you make the depth of flavor in that broth is always what will set your seafood soup apart. A lifetime of love for soup packaged into an inviting box. They couldn't make it easier for us to have restaurant-quality chowder in the comfort of your home.

If you choose to go the fish route, I recommend a firm thick cut of white fish (cod or halibut are affordable options) sliced into 1-inch cubes. For clams, you'll always want to be using at least 2 six-ounce cans of dried clams filled with clam juice.

One important detail to share for the keto seafood recipe is that clams do in fact contain carbs. In fact, most mollusks you'll find out there have a small number of carbs in them. So, if you want to stay one hundred percent on the keto diet supplement clams for fish, shrimp, or scallops. Whatever you have in your fridge at home!

How To Make Keto Seafood Chowder

With minimal prep time required and with an active cooking time of fewer than 20 minutes, this keto seafood chowder recipe is a perfect option for a weeknight or a special occasion to share with friends.

Cook the bacon

Crispy! Crispy! Crispy! There's nothing more disappointing than biting into an under-done slab of bacon. To ensure that bacon gets nice and crisp heat the pan on medium-high heat 2-3 minutes before you are ready to drop your heavenly pieces of bacon into the pan. That way you'll ensure the perfect crisp every time.

Add your onions, turnips, and "Secret Spice"

Remove the strips of bacon from the pan to a cutting board to later be diced into bite-size pieces. Then add your onions and turnips to the same pan leaving the bacon grease to infuse into the vegetables. Cook until all elements are tender in the pan. Finally, toss in your pack of Newport Chowder Company's secret spice to bring those family chowder spices to your home. You can also add the ingredient cauliflower for more veggies. Celery and cauliflower are both great options to boost veggies in any recipe.

Add chicken stock

Add the chicken stock to your pot with the vegetables and bring to a simmer. You will need to simmer the broth until the turnips become tender, approximately 15 minutes. You can check every 5 minutes with a fork just to double-check.

Low Carb
Quick! The Fish!

Fish always seems to cook faster than you think. This is the most active you should be while making this recipe. Treat that fish with some tenderness, love, and care, and the fish will give that back to you. The standard cook time for 1-inch cubes of fish at a simmer will only need 4 minutes to cook. Once fish is cooked turn the heat to low. Don't forget fish is very keto-friendly, you can add the shrimp to the mix of fish too. Chopped 1 soup per serving white fish. In less than time 10 minutes, you can add chopped shrimp to your recipe to boost the flavor of your soup.

Add your cream and butter

Ensure that your broth has been resting for 2-3 minutes on low heat or even completely off the heat. This will ensure that your cream does not curdle. Neither of these ingredients needs to cook so the only goal is to meld all the flavors together.

Thicken the broth

If you like how the chowder looks before this step grill up some bread and start plating! But, if you're like me and like a thicker soup staring back at you in the bowl you can add 1/2 - 3/4 teaspoon of glucomannan powder. This product is made from konjac root and thickens cream-based sauces very well with zero flavor impact. 5 stars minutes cook time guaranteed! Take in all those creamy carbs!

Can You Meal Prep Keto Seafood Chowder?

Like most keto seafood chowder recipes and all seafood dishes as a whole, they are always best fresh. With that said, if you do have leftovers from the day before you can gently warm them on the stove or even the microwave (Shhhhh don't tell Muriel) and the flavor is almost just as good. I would not recommend keeping the keto seafood soup for more than two to three days. Keto seafood chowder also does not freeze well, we tried that! You can check old bay nutrition information for more.

As a low-carb option, this meal is about as tasty as it gets!

On a side note, to turn back to the discussion of potatoes and turnips. I truly believe from the bottom of my seafood chowder-loving heart that the flavor difference is not noticeable. You wouldn't know a bowl of potato seafood soup from this turnip recipe if I never mentioned it.

The Newport Chowder Company family has made this recipe upside down, sideways, backward with pretty much every variant out there on the interweb. From bone broth to old bay chowder, to researching hundreds of easy keto recipes we have crafted this recipe with love for our community. Seafood chowder is the perfect low-carb comfort food that is guaranteed to transport you back to the east coast with every bite. Amount per serving carries but will serve in under time for 20 minutes.
